On Saturday, the hackathon about climate change, which brought together talented students from schools in Šibenik-Knin County, ended. The participants gathered to develop innovative solutions to face the most important challenges brought by climate change, such as rising sea levels and forest fires.
Competitors were challenged to develop climate concepts by solving real problems or meeting needs in their environment. They demonstrated their ideas through the creation of maps of ideas and solutions. Creating a short climate plan, which covered product or service description, target audience, monetization and marketing strategy, was a key part of the competition. Each team had the opportunity to present their idea and prototype in front of the judges and the audience, and the teams were evaluated on the basis of innovation, feasibility, presentation skills and potential for growth, standing out as gifted climatologists of the future.
After an intense and inspiring weekend full of creativity and collaboration, the jury chose the winners. The primary school of Jurjo Šižgorić won first place in solving problems related to climate change, especially in terms of how to reduce the use of fossil fuels and how to successfully dispose of waste and convert it into new materials.
In second place is Vjekoslav Kaleb Elementary School from Tisno, which also made an outstanding contribution with innovative solutions that have the potential to change the way we face climate challenges. Their solution to how algae can clean sea surfaces is an innovative view of elementary school students on changes in the immediate environment.
Meterize Elementary School took third place with a fire alarm project in areas that are extremely affected by fires, demonstrating the high level of engagement and creativity of its students in creating.
The climate change hackathon is the last in a series of hackathons held as part of the “RaSTEM” Regional Science Center project. The hackathons were attended by more than a hundred elementary school students who showed a high level of knowledge and engagement in current topics. The organization of the hackathon was financed from the EEA financial mechanism for the period from 2014 to 2021 and within the implementation of the “Local Development and Poverty Reduction” program.
The city of Šibenik is the project holder.
